Second Harvest Food Bank - Tuesday, October 9

Today we went on our field trip.  We chose Second Harvest Food Bank as our Community Outreach for the month of October so it was great to get to visit them for ourselves.  For the last two weeks we raised food in our Food Drive and then we packed it up on the bus to deliver it.  We raised over 200 lbs. of food for Second Harvest.

While we were there we got a tour of the huge building.

This was a display of donors that was really fun to look at.

Here Mr. Chris is taking us to our first spot on the tour.

This was a gentleman who packs weekend bags for children to take home.  We learned that some children don't have food when they go home for the weekend.  Second Harvester's prepares a bag for these children to take home from school for the weekend so they have food to eat.

Here we are in the entryway of the building.  It was a beautiful building.

This is the kitchen where Second Harvester's chefs prepare food for people to eat.  The proceeds they make from this service goes to purchasing food to Second Harvester's to give to those who need it.

The blue door in the background there is the refrigerator.  This is a huge room that was 32 degrees in temperature.  Here they store all the food that needs to be chilled in order to preserve it.  We went in there for only a minute.  There was a room even further back that stores meat.  It was -10 degrees in there!  We did not go in that room!

We learned that there is 11,000 square feet at Second Harvester's.  This was just one column of boxes filled with food.  The building was almost overwhelming with all the food there.  But we learned that it feeds so many thousands of people that all the food in the building would be gone in 11 days if it wasn't replenished.  Second Harvester's provides food for over half the counties in Tennessee.

Our final stop on the tour was the board room where the board members sit during meetings.  We got to sit in the chairs and ask questions about the Food Bank.  Overall we learned a lot from Mr. Chris, our tour guide.

We are thankful for our time there and that we got to learn about all the great things Second Harvesters does for those in need.

Thank you, Second Harvest Food Bank!
